Want to Know How to Cook Gourmet Foods? Learn The Basics First

by Brent Schumacher

Gourmet foods are done with sophistication, especially by Iron Chefs. You may think that a simple looking food is made by a snap of your fingers. This is not entirely true. You need not be an expert for you to make a remarkable dish, but knowing the basic of cooking will surely come in handy. Just remember that everything starts from scratch.

Before you master the art of cooking gourmet foods, you need to know what the basics are first. You should know how the food preparation process works. Cutting is very important. Another method, chopping, is used to have small-sized food items like onions and tomatoes. Dicing is another. This results to smaller pieces. Whatever method you prefer, you need to remember one thing: be careful with the knives you use.

Now after all those ingredients are ready, you can now saute all those. Sauteing is the process of cooking something quickly. A small amount of oil is used over direct heat while tossing all the spices and other ingredients altogether. Easy, isn’t it?

In gourmet food cooking, breading is another important step. Though this is a fairly easy and popular method, not a lot of people know how to do it properly. When breading, you need to use one hand dipping the meat in liquid while the other is used to dip the meat into the crumbs. This should leave you clean.

Now, if you don’t want that crunchy feeling in your mouth, try grilling. You can do that by directing radiant heat on your raw food. You can also try using a metal grate over hot coals. But if you prefer to do this indoors, there are available grilling pans in the market where you can grill your gourmet food on top of the stove.

Marinating your food before grilling is essential in gourmet food cooking. This is the process where you infuse different flavors to the food by soaking them in a marinade solution over a period of time.

For gourmet pastas, it is always best to check if your pasta is al dente. This has been the standard for most pasta cooking. You need to take care not to let your pastas sag from over cooking.

If you want to know how to cook gourmet foods, it’s a must that you first learn the basics of cooking. When you master them, that’s the time you can start experimenting with different gourmet dishes. Just remember to put passion in your cooking to ensure that you end up with a good-tasting dish.

Food Budget During a Recession

by Jackson Brown

Well, the recession is technically over. It sure doesn’t feel like it, however. Employers are still not hiring and you may have been lucky enough to keep your job, but you wouldn’t mind saving money each month. Especially, on your monthly food budget. How can you do this? You’ll need help from the internet.

You can do it the traditional way and look into your pantry and refrigerator for what food you already have in your kitchen. Then, go to your cookbooks and see what you can make with what you already have in the kitchen. Write down the ingredients you need to buy and head to the grocery store with your shopping list. That’s a good method, but that’s how things were done in the 1950s. Nowadays, you can utilize the internet to keep your family on a food budget.

Why would you find recipes the old fashion way, which will take an hour? You can utilize the internet and get the job done much much faster. Simply search “recipes by ingredients” and select from the list of recipe websites.

You have now found the recipe website you like the best. Make sure to bookmark it in your web browser. Jump onto the recipe site, type in the ingredients you already have and the website should tell you what recipes you can make. A good recipe website will allow you to plan your meals for the week.

Typically, I do this each Sunday for the entire week. Basically, I add in all the ingredients I already have at home and then select 5 recipes for the week. This will generate a list of groceries I need to buy for these 5 recipes. I print this list out and head to the grocery store.

We spend around $50 for 2 people (my wife and I) for the entire week (Monday through Friday) and that includes lunches. We use our leftovers for lunch throughout the week. After all, who has money to spend $8 on lunch each day? We spend around $200 per month and this saves us probably around $100 each month or $1,200 per year in savings. These websites are free (never use a recipe website that is going to cost you money).

I Love Cookbooks

by Deborah Keegan

I get immense pleasure from cookbooks. Great cookbooks impart not only the mechanics of cooking but if they’re really good can take the reader on a journey that is philosophical and spiritual as well as intellectual. A Platter of Figs and Other Recipes but author and Chef, David Tanis fills this bill. Tanis simply and elequently illustrates how easy it is to cook seasonaly, simple dishes with ease. If you love to eat this book is for you. It is all about the pleasure of eating simply and choosing the best ingredients available locally and sustainably.

Tanis has an enviable lifestyle. Six months of the year he is head chef of Alice Water’s iconic Chez Panisse restaurant in Berkeley, California. The remaining six months are spent in Paris preparing meals in a tiny galley kitchen in his 17th century apartment. Here Tanis plays host to a private dining club whimsically known as Aux Chiens Lunatiques for a dozen or so guests. His kitchen is ill equipped but proof that if you pay attention to detail, do it slowly and respect the inherent goodness of ingredients you can cook anywhere, anytime with whatever equipment happens to be at hand.

With twenty four menus divided into four seasons provding you with 6 menus for each season and accompanied by elegant yet homely photographs, Tanis’s book has you right where he wants you to be - at home. Within this cookbook you will not find recipes that take days to prepare. Rather imagine simple elegant prepartions that will allow you the luxury of lingering with friends and family over the dinner table without being rushed out or your seats. Enjoy the inherent tastes of each ingredient such as the clean crispness of raw fennel and exquisite olive oil that whets your appetite for authentic spaghetti alio e olio. To finish this simply wonderful autumn menu experience Italy’s famous Parmigiano Reggiano and a pear ripened to perfection. What more could you ask for?

Tanis’s book will take you to lock stock and barrel to place and time of inspiration. He accompanies each menu with a tale of the ingredients, who he shared each meal with and how or where he found his inspiration. Menu number 14 tells where Tanis experienced eating anchovy sandwiches alone in a Barcelona bar after a performance of the Belgium’s Bejart Ballet. Feeling Italian part three is Menu 22 where he recounts a memory of his Aunt Sally, a stylish sophisticate from Cleveland who gloried in her elegance and was renowned for her spaghetti evenings. Aunt Sally’s many guests would have to wait while she prepared 1 pound of pasta in one pot of water at a time. She made him promise always to follow her pasta cooking instructions and he did. But despite the never forgotten lesson Tanis tells us Aunt Sally was remiss in cooking for him.

Don’t be fooled by A Platter of Figs. This cookbook is charmingly simple but is the fruit of an artist. The temptation to embelish may try to overcome you but don’t give in. Learn about the food Tanis writes about and about all the food you eat. The evidence that you have succeeded will be on the palates and in the faces of those you cook for.

Quick And Awesome Honey Recipes

by Esther George

It has been a well known fact since the times of the ancient Greeks and Romans that honey boosts the strength and endurance of athletes. Honey, which is a powerful antioxidant, offers many benefits that we’re losing out on thanks to refined sugar being easier to use in most recipes.

Flavonoids and phenolic acids contained in honey helps to fight off free radicals, something we all need today. Honey recipes are so easy to prepare and maintain the same flavor, if not better, than the processed food with refined sugar that we grab at the store without even thinking about the ingredients.

Take honey barbecue sauce for example. Is there really any honey in that bottle that you purchased last week for your backyard barbeque? Try this quick, easy and nutritional honey recipe for barbecue sauce. Mix 1 can of condensed tomato soup, cup honey, 2 TBSP Worcestershire sauce, 2 TBSP salad oil, 1 TBSP lemon juice, 1 tsp mustard and a dash of hot pepper sauce. Mix all in a saucepan, bring to a boil, simmer and remove.

If you have a sweet tooth that just has to be fed, buy some frozen yogurt or custard and make up a honey caramel sauce fit for a four star restaurant. You will receive far less calories than ice cream loaded with chocolate syrup and a host of vitamins from your treat. Mix 1 cup honey, cup heavy cream, 1 TBSP butter, 1 tsp vanilla and 1/8 tsp salt in a heavy saucepan. Cook the first two ingredients to 238 degrees F, remove from the heat and add the remaining ingredients. Your sauce will thicken and be absolutely luscious.

There are also honey recipes for sweet, healthy snacks that, once made, can be kept for weeks. Rather than chips, candy, or cookies, try granola. Cover it with milk and eat it like cereal. You can add salty nuts to go with the honey sugar flavor, depending on preference.

Mix 2 cups coarsely chopped nuts, 4 cups rolled oats, and 1 cup raisins into a large mixing bowl. Blend together and set aside. In a large saucepan, combine cup melted margarine, cup honey, 1 tsp vanilla, 2 tsp ground cinnamon, and a pinch of salt. After mixing together, bring to a boil, allowing to cool for 1 minute. Remove and pour over oat mixture, stirring until blended. Pour onto a greased cookie sheet, then bake for 20 minutes at 350 degrees, stirring every 5 minutes. After it cools, crumble for a delicious treat.

Start replacing your sugar with a little bit of honey and before long, you won’t miss your granulated sugar at all. Test your recipes with honey sugar, taking into account the liquid measure. Lessen your liquids by cup for each cup of honey used and add tsp baking soda for each cup of honey used in baked goods.

As we take a long, hard look at natural foods, comparing organic and homemade to store bought and chemically ‘improved,’ we begin to realize how our bodies are affected by the empty calories we get from fast food and processed sugar. Honey recipes are easy to use and give us all the flavor of sugar, with honey sugar being so much better for us. Be creative and try making your own honey recipes to serve your own family.

How To Prepare Chicken At Home

by Sheryl Ingwer

My favorite thing to do with honey that you might not thing of is to use it in a chicken marinade. I combine two tablespoons of honey, four tablespoons of soy sauce, half a teaspoon grated ginger, a half teaspoon minced garlic and a dash of cayenne pepper in a sealable plastic bag. I mix it up well then toss in boneless skinless chicken breasts.

If you desire to have your food without salt, just substitute cider vinegar in place of soy sauce, or use low salt soy sauce. I let it marinate in the refrigerator for approximately an hour and then I put it on a grill. I enjoy cooking with a George Foreman grill, however you can bake it your oven if you want to. I just think that the smoky taste of the grill is really great with this marinade.

This works okay for shrimp as well, but really shines with chicken. Do you like Chinese chicken? If you do then I have a great Chinese chicken recipe that I’m happy to share with you. It is based on an old ‘Java’ recipe I used to order at a Chinese restaurant that is no longer in business. The secret is Rum - you heard it - Rum!

Scrumptious! You’ll need 1 large boneless, skinless chicken breast per person. Rinse, dry, and slice into quarter inch wide pieces. Next get together your favorite stir fry vegetables. I like to use carrots, broccoli, water chestnuts, bamboo, snap peas, and snow peas, but you can use whatever vegetables you like best.

The vegetables can be precut, frozen or you can prepare them as fresh (e.g. broccoli, carrot) or canned (water chestnut, bamboo, etc.). I usually slice them into uniform pieces. Drain any canned vegetables well before using in the stir fry. Now comes the fun part. You need some garlic and some good peanut oil, as long as you are not allergic to nuts.

Coat the chicken strips with a combination of flour and any spices of your choice. Add a small amount of corn, canola, or olive oil to a wok or fry pan, coating the bottom and sides.

Heat up 2 tablespoons of oil in your pan and then add the chicken strips. Keep an eye on them - you want to brown all sides evenly and lightly, and this does not take long! Once you’ve done that, use a slotted spoon to lift the chicken out of the pan and into a paper-lined bowl. Set that aside for a while. Then saute 3 cloves of finely chopped garlic in your pan, being careful not to burn it.

After the chicken is browned and removed from the pan, it is time to saute the vegetables. Add a little more oil to the pan if necessary. Now add the veggies. Keep stirring and turning, being careful not to let them burn. When they begin to soften a little, add the browned chicken. At this time you can also sprinkle in some soy sauce, rice wine vinegar, and season with finely chopped garlic and ginger.

Add a 1/4 cup warmed water, a little less is you like, then cover the pot. This mixture will need to simmer for 5 minutes with frequent stirring. Salt and pepper the mixture to taste. You will finish the dish with 1/4 cup of unflavored good rum. Be careful to stir or the rum may flare-up.

chicken crockpot is the easiest and the simplest way of chicken recipes .yet there are so many recipes for chicken, crockpot stands for its taste and presentations. the taste of chicken crockpot is so delicious and it can prepare in many ways. all you need is a bone in chicken breast.

Add about 14 ounces of chicken broth or chicken stock. A good brand is Swansons chicken broth, it has lower sodium levels. Cook the chicken on a low setting for about 8 hours. At this point you can also add any vegetables you like to the recipe such as carrots, potatoes and celery. You know the chicken is done when it falls off the bone.

Serve with buttered noodles, rice or mashed potatoes. The chicken will be very juicy and soft. You can also purchase a packet of brown gravy and make to serve over the chicken for added taste and texture.

Use Silver Goblets In Your Dining Room

by Alan Fischer

Anyone interested in the idea of buying wine goblets will have to do some thinking before deciding exactly what it is that they want. Aside from the obvious factors like price, it’s important that any goblets selected appeal to the personal preferences of the buyer.

For example, it’s critical that whatever you buy goes well with the rest of your dining room and table setting. If you have the budget, high quality crystal goblets will look beautiful just about anywhere, but not everyone can afford these. Then there’s the silver goblet, which looks great in older settings but might clash with a more modern table set.

As someone with a preference for the old, you may find silver goblets quite appealing. These are a step up from pewter in terms of quality, but they still do have that traditional appeal that makes them look like they could have come from other centuries.

You’ll immediately transport your diners back to the past, giving your meals a traditional Medieval setting, as people are so accustomed to seeing in movies and on television shows.

While these silver goblets are no doubt beautiful wine goblets, not everyone may have the financial means to afford them all. Much of the price will depend on the manufacturer and the grade of silver used, but these can be quite expensive.

Don’t despair though. There are plenty of other lower priced silver goblets that can easily be found by spending some time looking for the best deals on the web. There are plenty of sales and incentives for great quality wine goblets made of silver.

While visiting stores can also expose you to a wide variety of options, you simply can’t find better deals on silver goblets and other wine goblets than you can online.

A quick search can yield hundreds of different options, and shipping prices are extremely reasonable as well. This is definitely the recommended course of action for anyone interested in goblet shopping.

Aprons - Modern Style for an Old Standard

by Lenny Amoore

When one thinks of aprons, generally a vision of a housewife from the 1950’s will pop into mind, due in no small part to the efforts of advertisers of the era trying to promote the apron as a fashionable addition to any woman’s wardrobe. They were available in all sorts of styles, but the most popular were the frilly, with plenty of ruffles combined with a cute ribbon tie in the back. More than just a fashion statement, however, aprons were invented for functional purposes.

An apron is pretty much a piece of cloth that you can wear in the front of your body, tying in the back and normally looping around the neck. Not only used to shield your clothes, aprons can also be vital for hygienic reasons in the case of hospital workers or those who work in messy environments. Nurses and people who work with children may also consider the use of an apron. The apron can be seen as just an adult version of a bib.

Aprons can be made in a variety of materials. The standard kitchen ones are generally cloth combined with lace, but in some industrial environments they can be produced with stronger materials like vinyl or rubber. Some household varieties are designed to be waterproof, and coated with PVC or constructed from oilcloth. They can cover only the lower half of the body or the whole front.

Traditionally associated with women and the need for protecting delicate clothes, the traditional barriers of apron-wearers have broken down over the years. These days, aprons are worn by men and women alike, and are even enjoying a fashion renaissance. With vintage looks on the rise, there has been a great demand for vintage aprons, with entire online stores to cater for this need, and high sales rates in online stores such as Amazon.

With so many different styles and fabrics, there is an apron design for everyone. Whether one just wants to wear aprons as a fashion statement, or if you have a messy job to do, they are easy to locate in any kitchen store. Usually employers will provide the apron for their employees, like restaurant workers or people who work in fish canneries. One additional function that has arisen in recent years is the use of the apron as a background for corporate logos or slogans, for professional chefs to advertise their sponsors much in the same way that athletes carry logos on their clothes.

Honey Recipes Are Good Fun And Good For You

by Esther George

The strength and stamina that honey offers to athletes has been a well-known fact since the ancient Greek and Roman times. Maybe refined sugar just became easier to manipulate over the course of time in recipes but we are losing out on the antioxidant content that honey delivers.

Flavanoids - more commonly known as vitamin P - and phenolic acids, which can be found in honey, help the body fight free radicals. And did you know that there are dozens of honey recipes you can make at home that give you the same, sweet flavor offered by the processed sugars you pick up at the store?

For instance, consider honey barbeque sauce. How do you know if there’s really any honey in that bottle you bought last week for your barbecue? There are better honey recipes to use instead, such as this quick and easy recipe for barbecue sauce. Combine 1 can condensed tomato soup, 2 tbsp salad oil, 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce, 1tbsp lemon juice, 1 tsp mustard, cup honey and a dash of hot pepper sauce. Mix all together in a saucepan, bring to a boil, simmer and remove.

If you have an insistant sweet tooth, you can get some custard or frozen yogurt and put together a honey caramel sauce fit for a four star restaurant. It’s far less calories than ice cream with chocolate syrup, and you’ll be consuming many necessary vitamins with the honey-based treat. Combine 1 cup honey, 1 tbsp butter, cup heavy cream, 1 tsp vanilla and 1/8 tsp salt into a heavy saucepan. After cooking the first two ingredients, take away from the heat and add the rest of the ingredients. The sauce will thicken into something truly delectable.

Honey recipes can include tasty snacks that you can prepare and store for weeks. A healthy alternative to chips and candy is granola. You can even use as breakfast cereal with milk. You can combine sweet and salty, depending on your taste but here is a basic honey recipe that you will love.

Simply replace your sugar with a little bit of honey, and before long you’ll realize that honey has so much more flavor than white sugar. Try replacing sugar with honey sugar, but don’t forget to take into account the liquid measurements. Cut back your liquids by a quarter cup for each cup of honey you use, and add an extra half teaspoon of baking soda for each cup of honey when making baked goods.

Empty calories and processed foods have taken a terrible toll on our bodies, which is why it’s so important to start using natural foods. It’s easy to use honey recipes for any meal that you’d normally use sugar with. Let your imagination run wild and create your own honey recipes for you and your family to enjoy!
